We’ve got something really fun for all the creative (type)writers out there. Let’s get together and make some zines!
Before I get to the event details, first things first. Some of you might be asking,
“What a zine?!”
Great question!
A zine (pronounced ZEEN; short for magazine) is a small-circulation, self-published original work or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via a copy machine. They can be on any topic and can contain comics, collages, stories, recipes, lists, and more.
Basically, a zine is a mini publication made by you. Making copies or distributing them is completely optional. Actually, everything in a zine is optional. It’s truly a form to make your very own. That’s part of the fun!
Speaking of fun…let’s get to the when and where of making zines together!
Join us at Rudolfo Anaya North Valley Public Library (7704 2nd Street NW) from 3-4:30 pm on Saturday, April 26th, 2025 for a very special zine-making workshop (with typewriters, of course!) hosted by Geri Michelli, in collaboration with the ABQwerty Type Writer Society.
Making books and collages since 1991, Geri has taught many book art workshops for people of all ages. Her handmade books have been exhibited nationally and are even included in collections—both public and private. So when she sent us an email offering to host a zine-making event, we said, “Yes, please!”
During this 90-minute workshop, Geri will:
Show & Tell a variety of zines that use typewritten text
Demo a few single-sheet, fold-and-cut zine patterns
Discuss zine content, topics, collage, and illustration
Guide you through creating a zine of your own!
So bring a typewriter, bring some paper (regular printer paper will do!), and bring your ideas.
To ensure everyone gets hands-on instruction, space is limited to 12 people for this workshop. Please RSVP to abqtypers@gmail.com, no later than April 19, 2025 to reserve your spot. Registration is both no-cost, as well as first come, first served.
So what do you say? Wanna make a zine?
