Please join us TODAY, December 14 from 3 to 4:30 pm for our first official Type Away at the Tony Hillerman Library (8205 Apache Ave NE)!
Whether you are working on a novel, a poetry chapbook, writing letters, journaling, or crafting words in some other way, this event offers time and a quiet space for you to wordsmith in the company of other writers.
Here’s a sample schedule:
3 pm: Come and get settled in with your typewriter, introduce yourself, and mingle (if you’d like!).
3:15 pm: We will write quietly—or not-so-quietly, because we all know and love the sound of typewriters—for the next hour. This is go time, which means we are all about getting words on the page. (Should you arrive while writing is in progress, that’s okay. Please just be considerate of others being in the flow as you set up your writing station.)
4:15 pm: Time’s up! Let those fingers rest and admire all the words you wrote. We’ll share our writing wins (“I wrote 1,000 words!” or “I got a chapter done!” or “I wrote 3 letters!” or anything else you created). Let’s celebrate one another before saying our goodbyes.
And in case you missed it…
Last Sunday, six ABQwerty members gathered at Flying Star Cafe for a “pop-up”—an impromptu gathering at a local destination (typically a coffeeshop) where we all bring a typewriter and, well, type together.
Joe and Matthew reconned this location and found it both spacious and sufficiently noisy enough that additional “conversation” from our typewriters would not be an issue for other cafe patrons.
Tara also brought her own Charger 11, as well as a good selection of postcards to share with the group.
Peter, an artist and newcomer to the group, joined us from Santa Fe with his beautiful Erica M, and Kevin brought his Olympia SM7 in script typeface. Joe brought a Groma Kolibri, freshened up with a darkly-inked silk ribbon.
We enjoyed lively conversation, the opportunity to share our typewriter enthusiasm with a young passerby, and good ol’ camaraderie. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
There will be plenty more pop-ups and other events ahead in 2025, so keep your ribbons refreshed and at the ready.
