Dear Typists,
We had a fun Type-In at Botts Hall in the Special Collections Public Library last weekend. This historic library was, for many years, the city’s main branch, so it holds a special place in our hearts with its befitting name.
Plenty of typewriters were on hand, along with paper and writing prompts, in hopes of bringing out the creative writer in our guests. Letter-writing stationery and envelopes were also available for use as an alternative to the typically-staid form of modern communication—email.
I’m always amazed at the wide variety of experiences and ages represented at these events. For some, a Type-In revisits a method of writing that hasn’t been experienced in years. For others, it’s the first time sitting down with a typewriter, experiencing thoughts as they mechanically print directly to paper.
What often jumps out at me is how some people are attracted to a particular machine, as if they’d found their favorite writing tool. Others are like butterflies, hopping from one flower to another in search of that special flavor, just experiencing a variety of designs for themselves.
What’s Next
Soon, we will discuss Society membership and future plans for outreach into our community, including events to connect typewriters with creative writers. This outreach is an essential part of our mission to rediscover and repurpose traditional writing technologies, such as typewriters, to enhance lives.
Our next public Type-In will be on Saturday, October 14th at the Loma Colorado Main Library in Rio Rancho from noon until 4 p.m. We hope to see you there!
